Something new is taking shape upstairs: Hecht & Efraim’s metal ceilings

Not a novelty, but a comeback

The attention that the ceiling has received in recent decades is not new; in ancient times, the ceiling has held a place of honor among architects. In ancient Greece, it was painted in a uniform shade to emphasize the structural curves, and in the Renaissance, it served as a canvas for illustrations with a new level of originality. Today, the enormous potential that lies up there between four walls is returning in a completely different way.

“Supermaterial”

Metal, and especially steel, is a major material in the production of modern ceilings. These ceilings are widely used in a variety of public projects, from shopping malls to lobbies – spaces that become larger and busier over time.

Recycled steel is known as a “supermaterial” that does not contain volatile resins, is considered “green” and maintains good air quality in large-scale spaces. With such diverse design options, suspended ceilings, which until now were mainly intended as an excellent solution for disguising hanging pipes and lighting fixtures – take on new aesthetic value.

The “fingerprint” in every project

Choosing a metal ceiling is now considered a key consideration in space design. The advanced techniques of metal processing and finishing make it possible to build an infinite world of ideas, and to create models that integrate as the unique “fingerprint” of each project.

In the “Open Cells” series by DURLUM, for example, a wide range of styles can be found. The method of designing and assembling the tiles harnesses the play of light and shadow, creating a surface that is very different from the familiar standard ceiling.

Processing the tiles in different shapes creates unique textures: from a geometric style covered in sharp and clear lines like the one in the STARLAM model, to a fluid and organic look that appears in the TICELL model and simulates braided fibers.

Other ceilings, from the blue and white production of Hecht&Efraim, have the ability to integrate into complex textures and explore the limits of imagination. On the metal beams, various patterns can be printed and laser-cut – from arabesques to split “wood”, or even create the company logo in combination with a unique coloring that simulates acoustic plaster, in any shade from the RAL range. The many options make it possible to match the design concept of the project with the ceiling that suits it exactly.
