From Hecht & Efraim
As an acoustic partition, a plasterboard ceiling allows for the insulation of the designed space from noise – whether outside noise from the upper floor, or noise within the space itself.
Beyond that, a plasterboard ceiling has additional and essential functions. The first function is aesthetic – using a plasterboard ceiling, you can create a space for necessary components hidden from view: hidden lighting fixtures, installation of air conditioning systems, electrical wiring pipes and other elements that the designer wishes to hide from view.
Another function that a plasterboard ceiling allows is the designer’s control over the proportion of the space; lowering the ceiling allows for a change in proportions in relation to the other boundaries in the room – the floor and walls and large pieces of furniture.
Unlike drywall construction, in plasterboard ceilings, one layer of plaster is sufficient in the lower part of the ceiling. The metal construction that forms the basis of the plasterboard ceiling is balanced, but it is important that the metal base is strong to prevent bending that may occur due to the flexibility of the plasterboard.
Finally, we will note sensitivities that need to be taken into account before installing a plasterboard ceiling. Plaster ceilings are particularly sensitive to moisture, so it is important to ensure that there is no moisture in the existing ceiling during installation. The softness and flexibility of the plaster ceiling require careful connection – it is important that they be made using flexible tape according to the angles, as cracks sometimes form between the plaster ceiling and the walls adjacent to it.
At the same time, a plaster ceiling is flexible and easy to design, and allows for construction in an infinite variety of constructions. In relation to the alternatives (metal, wood, mineral ceilings, etc.), a plaster ceiling is environmentally friendly and made of biodegradable and easily recyclable materials, and is a creative, high-quality solution that is convenient for application in the designed space.
